Jayne Withers is an etiquette coach who teaches dining etiquette to both children and adults in Florida. Through this, she’s noticed some things about Gen Z. “I've noticed that Gen Zers are far more independent and socially responsible than older generations, but I've also witnessed Gen Z clients struggle to hold two-way conversations and put down their cellphones during a formal meal,” she says. “With extended periods of isolation thanks to COVID-19, a rising cost of living, and unprecedented environmental and social challenges, it's no surprise that some Gen Zers struggle with etiquette in formal settings.”
Jayne does have some etiquette tips specifically for Gen Zers who do struggle with this. What are they? Here’s five of them.
- Don’t use your phone at the table or during social interactions. When you do, you’re showing everyone that your attention’s divided. It can turn off a date, a prospective employer, and even friends.
- Tip considerately. And if you can’t tip fairly, show consideration in other ways like being polite to staff, not being demanding, and not leaving your table a complete mess.
- Focus on being fully engaged. Try to maintain eye contact with whomever you’re engaged in conversation with. Lack of engagement, especially in the workplace, can lead to you being passed up for promotions or even worse – fired.
- Be teachable. Don’t roll your eyes in response to questions or feedbacks. You can be critical, but do it respectfully, and be open to being teachable. Ask for feedback or ask lots of questions.
- Send a thank-you card after a formal event. It’s a powerful way to show appreciation and make yourself memorable.
