Teachers get to make the rules for their classrooms and one high school teacher is going viral after sharing some of the “teacher things” she doesn’t enforce in hers. Christina Pina recently took to TikTok to explain what she’s let go of in her classroom, claiming that being more lax is beneficial to her students. “My classroom still hasn’t burned down,” she says in the video. “And I think it helps my students learn because I don’t enforce these rules.”
Things Pina doesn’t get upset about:
- Pencils - She says she doesn’t care if her students don’t have one, she has them all over the classroom and they can take one if they need it. While this is a big issue for some teachers, Pina says she’s not mad at kids for not having a pencil and would rather they just grab one and get to work.
- Eating in class - This teacher encourages students to bring their food to class and eat if they’re hungry, pointing out that they can’t learn and be effective if they’re starving.
- Tardies - Pina shares that she’s not going to call a student out in front of the whole class to ask why they’re late. Instead, she welcomes them and says she’s glad they made it.
- Homework - In a second clip, she says she doesn’t assign it and that there’s not much research that proves homework is beneficial. But she will keep teaching until the bell rings, using all 45 of the minutes she’s got.
- Dress code - “I will not be enforcing a dress code in my classroom, in the hallways, anywhere,” Pina explains in the clip. “You know that we’re policing women’s bodies through this. No. Not my business. If you felt comfortable, you felt safe in that outfit, wear it.”
- Computers not being charged - She says it’s not a big deal and will offer students a charger and if she doesn’t have one, she’ll ask around to find one for them to use.
In the comments section, a lot of people agree with Pina’s rules, but others say she’s too lenient:
- “So this is why my college students are entirely unprepared,” writes one.
- Another shares, “Disagree - we are preparing children for life. A pen / pencil is the minimum.”
- “Half of me loves your list, but the other half of me thinks you aren’t preparing a student for the real workforce,” comments a third. “Seems a bit too lenient.”
