Ways to Lower Your Cost of Living

Inflation’s crazy. The cost of living is high. Our salaries haven’t gone up. This is something we’re all facing right now and it’s hard! The somewhat good news is that there are some things you can do to bring down your cost of living, and here are eight of them.

  1. Be strategic with your food budget. Have a list and a strategy when you go into a grocery store, don’t just wing it. Also, meal prep!
  2. Evaluate hidden energy costs. Unplug items when you’re not using them, opt for candles at times instead of lights, reduce your water usage, etc.
  3. Cut unnecessary recurring expenses. Did you subscribe to something and forget about it? Take a look at all your subscriptions and if you haven’t used it, end it.
  4. Transportation: Can you drive less and walk or bike more? If not, look into a car share program, like Turo.
  5. Housing: Consider looking for a smaller place or a less expensive area. If you don’t have a roommate, consider getting one. If you own your place, maybe rent out a room, or a parking spot, to make extra money.
  6. Learn some DIY and repair skills. There are so many free tutorials on TikTok and YouTube you can learn from and save money on hiring someone else to do it.
  7. Opt for free or low-cost activities. Especially in the summer, there are even more free activities outside like going to the park, hiking, etc.
  8. Try your hand at negotiating…everything! It really never hurts to ask, right?
