Booze, Shopping and Other Things Remote Workers Do on the Clock

One of the best perks about working from home is having more flexibility with your time, but according to a recent survey, a lot of folks are taking advantage of that. A survey of 1,000 U.S.-based remote workers reveals some of the ways they’re “multitasking” while on the clock.

  • One in seven employees admit they only work three to four hours a day when working remotely.
  • Nearly a third (30%) confess to occasionally moving their mouse around so their boss sees their status as “active,” rather than “away” or “offline.”
  • While on company time, 10.5% admit they’ve had sex and another 11.8% say they drank alcohol.
  • The most common non-work-related activities Americans do on the clock include:
    • Scrolling through social media (74.7%)
    • Household chores (71.6%)
    • Shopping online (69.6%)
    • Watching movies (52.9%)
    • Running errands (37.4%)
    • Planning a trip (32.2%)
    • Going to a doctor’s appointment (23%)
  • While most employees work from home, 13.7% prefer working from a coffee shop, 12.4% go to a friend’s house, 5.6% work in airports and 4.2% spend their work hours in a co-working space.
  • Gen X (60.4%) and millennials (59.4%) say they feel more productive working from home.
  • The majority of respondents - 80% - say they’d spend more time on assigned tasks if they only had to work four days every week.
