A Drive-Thru Only Fast Food Future May Be In Your Future

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many permanent changes to our lives, especially when it comes to our dining out habits. The NPD Group tracks American restaurant industry trends and they say that between February 2020 through February 2022, delivery orders increased 116% and drive-thru orders were up 20%.

Drive-thru orders are becoming the new normal for fast food chains, with Checkers, Rally’s Chick-fil-A and Jimmy John’s focusing more on that part of their business according to Nation's Restaurant News.

  • Some Chick-fil-A locations allow customers to skip the main drive-thru when using the app in new express lanes other chains are following suit.
  • Taco Bell has a new “Go Mobile” concept – debuting in New York – dubbed Taco Bell Defy, the goal is to “create a 2 minute or less drive-thru experience.”
  • Other chains with big drive-thru ideas include Shake ShackChipotle and more so look for your future in fast food to be a drive-thru only experience if these trends continue.
