While there are many people who think there’s no greater entertainment than to sit down with a good book, a new poll suggests fewer people are spending their time reading these days A new YouGov poll finds:
- 22% of Americans admit they haven’t read even part of a book in the past year.
- Another 11% have read only one.
- On the positive side, 36% of Americans say they’ve read between six and 10 books, while 12% have actually read more than 20.
- College graduates are more likely to say they’ve read more than 20 book (20%).
- Those with a high school degree or less are more likely to say they haven’t ready a complete book (32%).
- When it comes to age, those over 65 are the most likely to have read more than 20 books (22%).
- Those between 45 and 64 are the most likely to say they haven’t read a book in the past year (27%), followed by 30 to 44 year olds (23%) and those under 30 (21%).
When it comes to what people are reading…
- 28% of those who read at least one book enjoy reading mystery and crime books, with 14% saying they enjoy this genre the most.
- Other popular genres include:
- History (27%)
- Biographies and memoirs (22%)
- Religion and spirituality (20%)
- Thrillers (20%)
- Historical fiction (19%)
- Science fiction (18%)
- Other non-fiction (17%)
