The Biggest Mistakes Passengers Make When Packing Carry Ons

Cici has been a flight attendant for a major US airline for the past four years. She has an entire TikTok account @cici_inthesky, where she shares tips about flying. She’s also sharing seven big mistakes she’s seen passengers make when it comes to packing their carry on suitcases.

  1. Packing bags so full they can’t lift them into overhead bins. Passengers should be able to lift their own bags, it’s not the job of flight attendants.
  2. Bringing more than two bags on the plane. Most airlines only allow you to carry two bags on the plane with you and some charge for extra.
  3. Passengers whose essentials aren’t easily accessible can cause boarding delays. Pack everything you need on the plane in your personal bag that’s under the seat.
  4. Many passengers don’t pack liquids correctly. Things leak easily on plans because gases expand during a flight. Squeeze as much air out of bottles as possible.
  5. Not packing a reusable water bottle. You need to stay hydrated on a flight! Bring a reusable water bottle and fill it in the terminal before getting on the plane.
  6. Not packing their own snacks. Especially if it’s a long flight or if there’s turbulence and flight attendants can’t get up to give out snacks and beverages, you don’t want to go hungry.
  7. Packing heavy items instead of wearing them on the plane. It’ll save you lots of space in your carry-on.
