How To Recover After Sending A Text To The Wrong Person

You can literally feel your heart drop to your stomach after you quickly realize you’ve sent a text to the wrong person! Accidentally sending a sexy pic to your boss, a trash-talking text to the person you’re talking trash about, or a graphic text about last night to your grandma are all nightmare situations!

There are not a lot of options you have after this point. You may try putting your phone into airplane mode super quick but you most likely won’t be fast enough. You’re going to be forced to send a follow-up text of some sort – whether you decide to be honest or lie your way out of the awkwardness.

  • In most cases, it’s best to be brief and direct: “Wrong chat. That wasn’t for you. Sorry about that.”
  • If the message was explicit or embarrassing, put in a little more effort: “Ah, this is so awkward, but that was intended for someone else. I’m sorry for involving you and I would really appreciate if we could keep this private.”
  • If the message was something like mentioned above and you were bad-mouthing them in a message about them, go this route: I’m sorry about that. I am in a bad mood today, but I shouldn’t have insulted you. I’m finding it hard to concentrate today and your talking was distracting me, but that’s no excuse for being so rude.”
  • Or you could try what worked in 8th grade and tell them your friend stole your phone by saying something like “hahaha oops! My friend stole my phone and texted you. She’s so embarrassing! Anyway, what’s up?”
