When you’re young it’s common to have all these ideas of what it will be like when you get your first job and start your career, but the reality can be harsh, and you never really know what to expect. It would be nice to have some sage advice before heading to the workplace, and now folks on Reddit are doing just that.
It all started when someone on Reddit posed the question “What is the best career advice you would give to someone younger?,” and plenty of people were happy to offer their thoughts.
Advice includes:
- “Not sure if you’d deem this as career related, but if you’re the smartest person in the room.. you’re in the wrong room. you can definitely use this in all aspects of life, but it’s definitely helped me quit jobs and accept offers i otherwise would not have.”
- “No matter how knowledgeable you may be, stay humble and polite with your coworkers, rather than showing arrogance…No need to be friends, but keeping things pleasant wherever possible will not only make work go more smoothly, but also is great for networking for future prospects and promotions, and will make your day-to-day more bearable.”
- “You’re gonna make mistakes. That’s just part of the game. When you do mess up, acknowledge it, apologize, take your lumps, learn from it, and help to clean it up. Absolutely do not try to cover it up, lie about it and definitely do not try to pin the blame on someone else.”
- “Finding a job you enjoy going to is probably the single most important thing you can do in your adult life.”
- “You learn as much from a bad boss as you do from a good boss. Don’t worry if your boss is a total douche, eventually they will be gone. Learning what not to do is just as important as learning what to do.”
- “Please, for the love of god, learn how to write a resume. It's not an art, you can follow recipes, it's kind of easy even. Yet only 10% actually write a decent job application. And if you do get an interview, read up on the business, and ask questions.”
- “Do whatever you wanna do but always strive to become the best at it. That's how you will become truly successful.”
- “If you're lucky enough to know what field you want to work in, then do things when you are young to get some experience in the field so that you can "set yourself apart" from the competition.”
- “Don’t follow your passion. Go out and explore new avenues, you might find success in unexpected places.”
