Have you been living in cozy, soft clothing and athleisure for almost two years now? Many of us have been reaching for all things oversized and stretchy since the start of the pandemic and some are ready to leave the “couch potato couture” behind for something more polished. And they’re in luck because 1950s fashions are making a comeback. This was the era when women dressed up for even casual occasions and always seemed to look glamorous.
But we’re not talking about vintage clothes, these will be looks inspired by the 50s, but with a modern twist. Fashion stylist Rachel Garrett says the 50s fashions will be updated with sustainable and organic fabrics in 2022. Stylists share how these styles can be relevant today and how to wear them:
- Dresses- Shirt dresses were popular in the 50s because they offered women a “classic and clean look” that was - and still is - easy to wear, Garrett says. She recommends looking for feminine details, like button-down closures and cotton belts and pairing the dress with slides or espadrilles or sneakers for a casual look.
- Footwear- According to Hollywood costume designer and stylist Leesa Evans, kitten heels and oxford shoes are trends from the 50s that will be big in 2022. She explains that oxfords are best worn with trousers and kitten heels can dress up casual looks like jeans, a t-shirt and a cardigan.
- Skirts- For the 1950s look, go for a conservative skirt length with a flouncy silhouette. Retro ball skirts were all over the runway in pre-fall 2022 collections and these full skirts go with everything from heels to flats and t-shirts to crop tops.
- Color palette- Think bold and matching. Fashion stylist Jake Garcia explains that color was the focus of 1950s fashions, adding “The brighter the better.” He says the idea of “matchy-matchy” was created in the 50s and it’s back again in new collections from designers like Dior.
