When it comes to dating, it isn’t always easy to say what you really mean, especially when you are not interested in someone. That’s why many people fall back on some common phrases, which have completely different meanings than what is being said. 

Well, now relationship expert Louanne Ward has come out with a dictionary defining the real meanings behind 41 of the most common dating phrases, and it may clear up some things for the average clueless dater.

“If their words and actions aren't lining up this could be why,” Louanne says, “modern dating is a modern minefield.”

  • “I'm fine”– “I'm not okay, the s**t is about to hit the fan.”
  • “I don't want to ruin our friendship”– “There is no chance I am ever going to be with you.”
  • “Sorry I haven't called, I've just been so swamped”– “You are low on my list of priorities, I'll call when I have nothing better to do.”
  • “Do whatever you want, I don't mind” –“I'd much rather you do what I want. But I am testing you to see if you ignore what I want.”
  • “It's not you, it's me” –“It's actually you, not me. I'm just trying to make you feel better.”
  • “I'm not sure what my plans are right now. Can I let you know?” -
  • “I'll wait until the last minute and see if something better comes up.”
  • “I'm not usually a jealous person” –“I feel insecure around you and have trust issues.”
  • “I need to work on myself right now”- 'I'd rather be on my own than try with you.'
  • “I'm too old for this s**t” –“I'm avoiding responsibility for my past relationship breakdowns and use my age as an excuse.”
  • Dating App phrase –“Sorry for the late reply I am terrible at dating apps”- “I am not serious about meeting someone. It's a game to me.”
  • Dating App phrase -“I just like to know someone before meeting them in person” – “I am going to analyze everything you say and make judgements before I even meet you.”
