A Third of Adults Have Fallen Out With Someone After Misreading Texts

Miscommunication from texting happens all the time. But can it cause relationships to end? YES.

A new study of 2,000 adults finds:

  • One-third of adults have fallen out with someone after misreading texts.
  • Four in ten can spend hours trying to decode the text to see if the person is just kidding or really annoyed.
  • One in five assumed someone was in a mood… when they weren’t

When it comes to what types of texts and emails are being overanalyzed, 35% say it’s primarily from work colleagues, 20% say a partner, and 13% say love interest. Because of this, 23% of people waited to respond until they were face-to-face, to avoid any miscommunication.

Age also plays a factor, as feelings of anxiety were heighted for 41% of 18-24 year olds, but only for one in 10 of those over the age of 55.
