How To Remove Your Ex From Your Digital Life

Breakups just aren’t what they used to be. Not only do you have to clear out anything that reminds you of them IRL, you also have to do that online. And since blocking them isn’t enough, here are the digital steps experts recommend everyone takes after a split.

  • Change Every Single Password. You’ve probably logged into an account on their device at some point so changing your passwords is a must. It’s a pain but once they get into one of your accounts, they could potentially get into more. You’re supposed to change them regularly anyway, right?
  • Be A Liar. While you’re changing your passwords, change your security questions and answers as well. Lie about your mom’s maiden name if you have too. Unless you’re positive your ex knows nothing about you, then you’re probably in the clear.
  • Check Your Bills. Go through your last statement and make sure to get rid of any shared accounts you too had together. More specifically any that you’re footing the bill for. We won’t tell your ex that you’re still using their Netflix account.
  • Banish Bad Memories. Do your future self a favor and make sure all the apps that serve you “memories” don’t include your ex from now on. Facebook, Google Photos, and Apple Photos all have settings to hide them. Do it now so that pictures of you two looking happy don’t haunt you later.
