How To Find And Look Great In Jeans

Can’t seem to find a flattering pair of jeans? It isn’t easy. In fact, with so many options and not enough quality picks, it can feel as hard as trying to find “the one” on a dating site. But just like in love, when you know what you want, it’s easier to find what you’re looking for. These rules won’t do much for your love life, but they can help you find jeans you’ll look great in.

  • Rule 1: Choose thicker materials and heavy stitching- Finding a quality pair is half the battle to looking good in jeans. Look for heavy stitching around hems, pockets and side panels, as well as heavier fabrics and well-constructed buttons and zippers. Thin denim may bag around your crotch and knees and that’s not a good look on anyone.
  • Rule 2: Follow the law of proportions- If you’re trying to draw attention to or away from a certain area, play the proportion game. Do your thick thighs make you cringe? Find a boot-cut pair to elongate your figure. Want to lift your booty? A high-waisted pair gives the illusion of that. On the shorter side? A fitted, cropped pair can make you look taller.
  • Rule 3: Get 2% stretchy- If you want a more form-fitting look, get denim that’s a little stretchy, but go for styles with no more than 2% Lycra or Spandex. That way they won’t break down in the wash or be so tight they give you visible panty lines.
  • Rule 4: When in doubt, go with a darker wash- Want a slimming effect? Dark rinse denim to the rescue!
  • Rule 5: Add heels, except in one case- High heels will elongate your legs and upgrade your look, especially for cropped, wide leg and boot cut styles. But if you’re wearing ankle-length skinnies? They go better with a flat or a boot.
  • Rule 6: Tailor for length, not fit- If you find a pair of jeans that fit perfectly through the hip and thighs, but drag on the ground, take them to your local tailor. It’s worth the expense to have them alter the length, but they can’t work the same miracles with the fit.
