New Weight Loss Device Uses Magnets To Lock Jaw Closed

Think you’ve seen it all when it comes to weight loss trends? Get ready for theDentalslim Diet Control, a new device that locks the jaw closed and restricts users to a liquid diet. It was developed by a group of researchers from New Zealand and the U.K. to help users shed pounds by keeping them from eating solid food.

The device uses locking bolts attached to users’ upper and lower back teeth to keep them from opening their mouths more than two millimeters. And while they can still breathe normally, it ensures they can’t eat food, so they’ll lose weight. There’s also an emergency release mechanism, in case of a panic attack or choking.

Lead researcher Paul Brunton explains, “The main barrier for people for successful weight loss is compliance and this helps them establish new habits.” And when the device was tested on volunteers on a liquid diet of 12-hundred calories a day, they lost an average of 14-pounds in two weeks. But immediately after theannouncementof the device hit Twitter, the backlash started. Critics have called it “evil,” “hateful,” and “disturbing,” with some comparing it to a “torture device” from the horror movie “Saw.” Others say it promotes fatphobia and someone called it “one of the most appalling things I have ever seen.”
