Tinder Will Now Let You Chat Before Matching with Someone

Want to chat with someone BEFORE you swipe right or left? Tinder is giving you the opportunity. They’re rolling out updates this week that will give people the chance to learn more about someone they might want to date. The dating app is adding several new features, including the chance to chat with potential dates before making a match.

That feature, called Hot Takes, is described as “a social experience” and will be the first time Tinder users are able to chat with each other before they match. But it’s brief, a timer will tick down during the session and users will choose to let it expire and move on or complete a match from there.

Tinder is also giving users the option to add videos to their profiles, instead of the still pictures currently allowed. They’re also adding an Explore tab later this summer, where users can search for people based on shared interests.

  • Tinder CEO Jim Lanzone says more Gen Z users on the app is the reason for the updates. “A new generation of daters is asking for more from us in the post-COVID world,” he explains. “More ways to show off their authentic selves, more ways to have fun and interact with others virtually and more control over who they meet on Tinder and how they communicate.”
