The Weirdest Impulse Buys People Made During The Pandemic

So you bought a puzzle or a houseplant during the pandemic. That’s cute. While you were hitting “Order Now” on some trendy items, other people were getting bizarre with their orders and buying things you didn’t even know were available on the Internet. Here are some of the craziest purchasesVICEreaders admitted to:

  • Fake Bugs. Now before you call Aditya Arora crazy, you should know that her impulse buy of fake bugs wasn’t just for fun. It was for Instagram. Arora said she ordered a toy cockroach in quarantine and posted “funny IG stories with Kevin.” And yes, its name is Kevin and it’s besties with her fake lizard Peter.
  • A Cow. Ajeet Singh does live on a farm which makes the cow less crazy than if they lived in a studio apartment but the costs of owning said animal are pretty nuts. The whole idea was to save some money on milk but after factoring in the cow’s food and medical costs, Singh’s family is now paying about $40 a month more for the fresh stuff. But those bowls of cereal have to be worth it.
  • A Kalimba. Many people took up music as a hobby. But while guitars and ukuleles were flying off the shelf, Ankit Singh opted for a kalimba. It’s an instrument from Zimbabwe made from a wooden board with pieces of metal attached. Ankit bought it based on a “friend’s recommendation [and] fell in love with the sound.” But as is the story with many people’s lockdown hobbies, they quit after the “first wave tapered.”
  • Hundreds Of Children's Books. Saanvi Mehta opened up a kid’s library for one during the quarantine. Instead of Netflix, Saanvi binged the authors they grew up with and says it’s “been comforting to read these familiar names in such strange times.” And it should make for a hell of a Facebook Marketplace listing in a few months.
