Old Fashioned Dating Advice That Still Applies Today

When it comes to dating, there’s an endless amount of outdated advice you’re better off ignoring, like men should make the first move and men should always pay. But we shouldn’t brush off all old-fashioned dating advice because some of it is still worth following today, like these bits that can help on your path to long-lasting romance.

  • Hold the door- Sure, your date can do it on their own, but there’s still something romantic about holding the door for your companion. And it works for women holding the door for men, too.
  • Write love notes- Texting is pretty much the only writing we do to our partners, but a handwritten love note is still as charming as it was 100 years ago.
  • Don't play games- Not calling back or pretending to be too busy for someone doesn’t make them fall for you any more than it did a century ago.
  • Don't drop everything for them- When you really like a person, it’s easy to want to spend all your time with them, but you don’t want to lose yourself along the way. "Relationships are like fire,” love coach Mona Green explains. “If you want them to last long, they need a healthy dose of oxygen.”
  • Argue in person- At some point all couples argue, but even though it may seem easier to deal with disagreements over text, try to do it the old-fashioned way and talk it out in person instead. Texts can be misunderstood and emotions just can’t be expressed the same as they can in person.
  • And never go to bed angry- This old school advice is still recommended by some experts who suggest talking out your issues for as long as it takes, so you can put the negativity behind you instead of waking up mad at each other.
