When To Walk Out of a Job Interview Early

Have you ever been sitting in a job interview and realized about midway through that there was no way were going to fit in there? Can you end the job interview early? The short answer is yes, and the longer answer is there are some stipulations.

"Ask a Manager"’s Alison Green says you should walk out immediately if an interviewer is unexpectedly rude or the job itself ends up being different than what was advertised. Otherwise, it’s your call.

If you do decide to dip out early, stay professional. There’s no need to flip the table, splash your water in their face, and make it rain resumes down the hall.While it would be fun, it’s going to leave a bad taste in their mouth, and you never know, another position might be more suitable for you that’s opening up soon.

So be tactful about ghosting your interviewer. Pick a natural transition point like the Q-and-A portion. When they start firing off the get to know yous, tell them you appreciate their time but don’t see yourself as a good fit. Wish them all the best, shake their hand, and then go start applying to better places in your car.

  • If you’re not confident enough to pull off this boss move, no worries, If you’ve made up your mind that the company isn’t a great fit for you during the interview, use it as practice for your next one. Try out that “where do you see yourself in five years” answer you’ve been working on and see if it scores you a callback.Then just don’t call them back.
