Woman Has Baby In Bathtub After Hospital Sends Her Home

Leo and LeeAnn Bienaime were expecting their first child when she felt like it was time to head to the hospital to have the baby. But the Virginia couple says Naval Medical Center Portsmouth sent them home and told them to come back when her contractions were more intense. LeeAnn says she was told to return when she couldn’t really walk or talk through her contractions.

So the soon-to-be parents drove the 25-minutes home, but the first-time mom has a high pain tolerance and wasn’t sure when to go back to the hospital until it was too late. LeeAnn felt her son’s head and tried to hold back until professionals arrived, but there was no time and Leo called 911 and she got into the bathtub. About four hours after they left the hospital, they welcomed their son, Joachim, which they delivered with help from a 911 operator.

The couple says the responding firefighters and the woman who took their 911 call and coached them were great and that everything went well with the birth and now they have a healthy baby boy. But that doesn’t mean they would do it the same way again, if they had a choice.

“If I could do it again, I would’ve just sat in the waiting room and not left. We would’ve pitched a tent,” Leo jokes. “We would’ve started a fire. We would’ve just straight-up camped.”
