You want your relationship to be a healthy and happy one. You’re not going to do anything to deliberately sabotage things. But unfortunately, it’s easier than we may realize to fall into bad habits that’ll have a bad affect on our relationships.
According to licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula, “[r]elationships typically don't end over one big thing, but rather lots of little things that slowly bleed it to death.” Little issues tend to not be seen as important as big issues are, but they can really add up and cause toxicity. “In some ways, the bad habits weaken the foundation of a relationship, leave people feeling more vulnerable, less invested, more full of self-doubt, and more likely to surrender or less able to collaborate when under stress,” Dr. Ramani explains.
No one’s perfect. But by keeping the little bad habits on your radar, you are avoiding unintentionally ruining your relationship. So, what are they? Here are 7 little things you may be doing that are actually poisoning your relationship.
- You’re on your phone all the time.
- You make public jokes at your partner’s expense.
- You keep score, even in your head.
- You’re passive-aggressive.
- You start fights over text.
- You criticize their family.
- You don’t show regular acts of love.
