Have you ever bought yourself something you wanted as a kid, but your parents wouldn’t let you have or couldn’t buy for you? You’re in good company, as 65% of adults do it, according to a new survey. It finds that many of us reminisce over our favorite childhood toys and four in five adults look up their childhood favorites for the nostalgia.
The poll of 2-thousand U.S. adults commissioned by MGA’s Miniverse and conducted by OnePoll reveals:
- About 59% consider themselves a “kidult,” an adult who holds on to their childhood spirit with things like video games, movies and fashion.
- The top signs you’re a kidult include frequently rewatching shows and movies from childhood (59%), watching cartoons (54%) or remembering specific products from childhood (49%).
- If they had the chance, 67% of respondents would try to buy a replica of something from their childhood and 76% would feel nostalgia in the process.
- Just over half (54%) say they “always” buy the stuff they couldn’t have as kids, including video games (51%), clothes (51%) and snack foods (41%).
- More than a third (38%) have toys and collectibles on display at home or work and 68% feel they’ve formed a relationship or made one stronger because of the toys or collectibles they display.
- The average toy collector spends $158 a month on toys and collectibles.
- While 84% of toy collectors have held onto toys from their childhood, 85% say they’ve bought either toys from their childhood or exact replicas of their childhood toys.
