The 7 Deadly Sins Of Learning How To Cook

Cooking isn’t always as easy as we may have thought it to be when we were younger. Knowing what not to do in the kitchen can be a big help in making sure you don’t burn down your house or poison your guests (or yourself). Here are seven big cooking “dont's” thanks to “Lifehacker.”

  1. Ignoring basic kitchen safety. Use oven mitts and potholders and never put water on a grease fire.
  2. Getting too ambitious. There are so many delicious, simple recipes out there for you to try and then work your way up to harder ones.
  3. Not planning or preparing enough. Cooking is much less stressful when you plan and prepare in advance and aren’t rushing to do stuff.
  4. Not tasting as you cook. No matter how perfectly you’re following the recipe, taste, and spice as you go.
  5. Overcooking and undercooking. Use cooking thermometers and make sure you know the strength of the heat on your oven or stove.
  6. Not having enough patience. Cooking takes time and crowding everything on a pan or cookie sheet will not taste the way you want it to.
  7. Burning the garlic. It cooks super quickly, so be careful, but burnt garlic will really change the taste of whatever you’re making.
