How You Should Handle Road Rage

Road rage is very real. We all get annoyed and may even let some curse words fly when someone cuts us off or doesn’t use a turn signal. But unfortunately, some incidents lead to seriously scary incidents. Here are some ways to keep yourself safe on the road.

  • Get out of the way, if possible. If you just did something to make a driver mad, turn down another street to get away from them if you can, just to be safe.
  • Put your pride aside. It can be easy to stoop to someone else’s level, especially when you want to defend yourself. Keep in mind that you don’t know who you’re dealing with and you don’t want to mess with the wrong person by further antagonizing them.
  • Don’t make eye contact. Keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes forward. Making eye contact is enough to start a confrontation.
  • Be empathetic towards the driver. clinical psychologist Lakeasha Sullivan, PhD says to “assume that this person’s rage is situational and not indicative of a character flaw. Underneath anger is usually sadness. So, imagine that they just received some of the worst news in their life and they don’t know how to cope with it. Wish them the best and move on.”
